About us

Founded in 1841, we are one of the oldest charities working with deaf people in the UK. Celebrating deaf culture and community is an essential part of what we do. With deaf people, and in collaboration with others, we innovate and deliver services that deaf people want and need.

In 1876, Queen Victoria agreed to become our organisation’s patron, and we have greatly valued and appreciated our connection with the Royal Family ever since. His Majesty King Charles III became our new Royal Patron in 2025, a mark of excellence and our commitment to delivering the highest quality services.

RAD strive for a future of opportunity, achievement and equality for deaf people.

We believe that ability to communicate effectively and access information are fundamental to achieving this.

Our Benefits

As a culturally deaf service delivery organisation, it is important that all RAD colleagues are competent in British Sign Language (BSL). All colleagues must attain BSL Level 2 within four years of joining RAD. RAD will pay the fees for one course and two exam attempts for both BSL levels and will allow colleagues time to attend these courses in work hours. Deaf colleagues may benefit from formal training to improve their sign language skills; or from the opportunity to achieve additional qualifications.

All hearing colleagues are provided with Deaf Awareness training helping them to develop respectful communication skills and insights into the daily experiences of deaf people. You’ll learn key terminology and practical tips for effective engagement to help create a more inclusive environment.

Our permanent positions come with an enhanced annual leave entitlement from day 1, which will further increase with your length of service.

We offer a life assurance benefit to provide peace of mind for you and your loved ones. In the event of your death while employed by RAD, a lump sum payment of 3 times your annual salary will be paid to your nominated beneficiary. This benefit is provided at no cost to you and is in place from after your probationary period.

We care about the wellbeing of our colleagues and understand the importance of taking time to rest and recharge. In addition to annual leave, we offer a Wellbeing Day: an extra day off each year that you can use whenever you need time to focus on yourself. Whether it's for mental health, rest, or simply a reset, this day is yours to use with no questions asked.
